Style Icon: David Gandy

JOE isn't in the habit of looking up male models but there’s something inherently cool about Essex native David Gandy – cool and Essex in the same sentence... we know.

Probably most recognizable for being the face of uber-swish brand, Dolce and Gabanna, Gandy has also had his mush and enviable torso featured in campaigns for the likes of Huge Boss, Zara and H&M. In a business where the women firmly take the lead (and the vast majority of the cash), Gandy has become an almost unparalleled success story.
Winning a modeling competition on ITV programme This Morning was the first step in a remarkable road to success for Gandy. While those of us who don’t tout our mushes for a living mightn’t understand, the modeling world is more than just about who is or isn’t conventionally, or unconventionally handsome.
Unlike a lot of the hipster models that you might see flogging gear for the likes of Top Man, Gandy looks very much like a guy’s guy; not just a skinny dude with a beard. He’s obviously incredibly well-groomed, but if that was part of your job wouldn’t you be too?
Male models for the most part are strange looking creatures. It seems the fashion brands forget that in order for us to want to buy the clobber featured on these guys, there has to be somewhat of a vicarious angle.
Generally speaking, broad, muscular shoulders and a thin waist are things to aspire to when training in the gym – not stick think legs and a scruffy beard.
We like Gandy not just because his style is so organic; but because he looks like a proper man in them

While those of us who don’t tout our boat races for a living mightn’t understand, the modeling world is more than just about who is or isn’t conventionally, or unconventionally, handsome.

He’s obviously incredibly well-groomed, but like all of the Style Icons we’ve featured so far it’s more about how he holds himself.

We like Gandy not just because his style is so organic; but because he dresses like a man – surely that’s the point
