Google has been working hard on its driverless technology over the past few years, and recently the company tested out their very own autonomous prototype car by putting regular Joe Soaps behind the nonexistent wheel.

You might be wondering, ‘what does it mean to be “fully autonomous”’? Well, Google’s fully autonomous prototype car doesn’t come equipped with a steering wheel or accelerator/brake pedals as the car uses a series of cameras, sensors and other forms of data to drive the car without the need for human contact – apart from pressing the go button, of course…

Speaking over on YouTube, the guys at Google’s Self-Driving Car Project, said: “Fully autonomous driving has always been the goal of our project, because we think this could improve road safety and help lots of people who can’t drive.

“We’re now developing prototypes of vehicles that have been designed from the ground up to drive themselves—just push a button and they’ll take you where you want to go! We’ll use these vehicles to test our software and learn what it will really take to bring this technology into the world.”

It’s a pretty cool piece of technology, even if the car looks a bit dod and it’s sure to have many benefits, especially for those who can’t get around on public transport or on bikes. To find out more about Google’s Self-Driving Car Project head over to the official Google blog.
