WATCH: RTÉ’s documentary about Veronica Guerin and gangland violence on Monday night looks unmissable

If you’ve no plans on Monday night, you’d do a lot worse than checking this out.

Veronica Guerin: A Legacy airs on RTÉ One on Monday night at 9.35pm and, judging by the brief trailer, it’s a fascinating and intriguing study into gangland violence in Ireland.

The documentary centres around the tragic killing of the Sunday Independent journalist, Veronica Guerin, with the renowned crime reporter’s murder having had massive implications on Ireland when it occurred in 1996.

The Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) was founded in the direct aftermath of the murder, giving Gardaí far more power to control and implicate criminals.

However, 20 years on, gangland violence remains prevalent throughout Ireland, with many commentators believing that such crime in the country is now in a worse state.

The former Labour Party leader, Ruairí Quinn, who was the Minister for Finance at the time of Veronica Guerin’s murder, has told the documentary:

“There is a real crisis here in Ireland but specifically in the greater Dublin region.

“I think what we have to do, and the current generation of young politicians are going to have to look at ways of doing it, they are going to have to do what we did in the past but this time it has to be done at a European-wide level”.

As already mentioned, this looks like it’s going to be an excellent documentary, and a must-watch for anybody who is interested in the current crisis of crime in Ireland.

Quinn added: “We don’t need another Veronica Guerin. One Veronica Guerin, her murder, her sacrifice, should be enough. It was enough in the beginning, the question now is: ‘is it enough still?’”.

A quick reminder; Veronica Guerin: A Legacy will be screened on RTÉ One at 9.35pm on Monday night.
