Elsewhere, it emerged that just under seven in 10 Irish motorists wait until their fuel gauge is in the red before re-fuelling their car. If they get into bother through a lack of fuel on the road, 57% would ring a parent or guardian, while 17% would get straight onto the phone to AA Breakdown Assistance.
In a statistic that suggests a little OCD amongst Irish drivers, meanwhile, 83% of survey respondents said that they fuel up to the nearest round number.
45% admitted that they didn’t know why they did it, with another 24% saying that it was through force of habit.
