Motorists in Dublin could end up paying more to tax their car than elsewhere in Ireland

Recommendations in a report by the Dublin City Council are due to be discussed on Thursday.

A report by Dublin City Council aimed at increasing the efficiency of the collection of motor tax could end up hitting motorists in Dublin in the pocket.

According to RTÉ, the report recommends imposing a levy on motorists who decide to pay their motor tax over the counter at an office in Dublin instead of online on the Motor Tax website.

Motorists in Dublin can currently pay their motor tax over the counter, at only one office in Dublin, in Smithfield, with the report suggesting that it is used by as many as 12,000 people every month.

85% of motorists, meanwhile, pay and renew their motor tax using the online service.

In an attempt to increase efficiency, the report recommends that an unspecified levy be imposed on those who pay their motor tax over the counter; recommendations about the removal of tax discs in Ireland and the removal of the quarterly payment option have also been included in the report.

The recommendations, which have been criticised by Age Action Ireland, will be discussed at a meeting of Dublin City Council’s Finance committee on Thursday.
