The Hyundai Tucson was way out on its own at the top of the list of new cars sold in Ireland last year.

7,132 models of the SUV were licensed in Ireland in 2016 according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on Friday, making it easily the most popular model of new cars in the country.

The Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Skoda Octavia also proved popular with Irish car buyers in 2016, with another SUV, the Nissan Qashqai, making up the top five.

CSO data reveals that 8,105 new private cars were licensed in August 2017, a decrease of 17.1% on the figure for August last year.

The number of imported cars licensed in Ireland last month, however (8,220), increased by 34% on the figure for August 2016, while there was an increase of 1.8% in the total number of vehicles licensed in August 2017 (21,551) compared to August 2016.

As far as the colour of Irish cars is concerned, grey was just about the most popular colour of new car last year (20.7%), followed by black (19.2%), silver (15.7%), white (14.9%) and red (11.8%).
