These are the 13 best movies on the TV this weekend

Rory Cashin

Some amazing action flicks and more than a few scary thrillers to chose from this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Heading to the cinema this weekend? Then head to our movie show The Big Reviewski, where we’ve reviewed the latest releases, and recommend what you should check out, and what you should definitely avoid:

However, if you’re finding yourself couch-bound this weekend – and the weather is just erratic enough to make that a possibility – then we’ve also picked the best movies to watch on the TV.

FRIDAY 1 JUNE

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – RTE 2 – 21:35

David Fincher directs Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in this incredibly dark murder mystery thriller, as a journalist and a hacker are forced to work together to uncover a decades-old plot that all kicks off with a young girl going missing.

The Transporter – TV3 – 22:00

Jason Statham is a delivery man, of sorts, who knows how to kick people in the face, should the situation call for it.

The Hallow – Film 4 – 23:20

An Irish-set horror movie dealing with a couple attempting to survive the night in the countryside, having discovered that there are evil forces at work that definitely do not want them around.

Seven Psychopaths – Channel 4 – 00:05

Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken and, eh, Tom Waits star in this dementedly dark comedy about dog-nappers and assassins and gangsters all getting caught up in the life of a wannabe screenwriter.

SATURDAY 2 JUNE

A Knight’s Tale – RTE 2 – 15:35

Heath Ledger at the height of his charming powers, playing an olde school knight, attempting to win the hand of a fair lady. With a killer soundtrack, too.

Catch Me If You Can – RTE 2 – 20:00

Spielberg, Hanks and DiCaprio team up for the true story of a master con artist who doesn’t let the fact that he’s a teenager get in the way of his talents.

2012 – SyFy – 20:00

The ultimate disaster movie. Seriously, after this, Hollywood shouldn’t need to make another movie about tidal waves or volcanoes or whatever, ‘cos this one does it all.

Speed – Channel 4 – 21:00

“There’s a bomb on a bus…”

The Wedding Singer – Sky One – 21:00

Adam Sandler’s best movie. Don’t @ me.

Meet The Fockers – 23:30

The comedy sequel finds DeNiro forced to meet Stiller’s parents, played to perfection by Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand.

SUNDAY 3 JUNE

Prometheus – Film 4 – 23:05

The prequel to Alien that you either defend or hate, still has one of the best sequences in the entire series, with Noomi Rapace trapped in a medical tube, having just had an alien cut out of her. Insanely tense. If only the entire film was like that…

Up In The Air – BBC One – 23:35

George Clooney is the life-long bachelor who finds his lifestyle turned upside down by a kindred spirit, played by Vera Farmiga, and his exact opposite, played by Anna Kendrick. A smart, funny, emotional romantic drama.

The Paperboy – Film 4 – 01:30 (the early hours of Monday morning)

And now for something completely different. John Cusack, Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey and David Oyelowo star in this twisted sexual thriller that is pinned on the investigation into a man on death row.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
