great movies

Some great movies that might have gone under your radar this year…

Be it either because you simply didn’t get around to watching them, or maybe some of them passed you by entirely, but these great movies all deserve a watch.

The end of the year, in that nether region between Christmas and New Year’s, is the perfect time to catch up on some great movies at home, so here is our list of hidden gems released in 2022, starting with…

AFTERSUN

Paul Mescal headlines this absolutely heartbreaking drama, playing a father trying to have a fun sun holiday with his 11-year-old daughter, but the real world is lying in wait, already prepared to erode away at their happiness.

Still in cinemas.

AFTER YANG

What a year Colin Farrell has had! The Batman, Thirteen Lives (which almost made it on this list) and The Banshees of Inisherin all made an impact, but his least-seen film of 2022 is also maybe the most interesting. As he attempts to repair his daughter’s lifelike android, he also attempts to repair the fractures within his entire family.

Available to stream on NOW and Sky Movies.

THE BAD GUYS

A stellar voice cast including Sam Rockwell, Craig Robinson, Marc Maron, Zazie Beatz, Richard Ayoade and Awkwafina feature in this animated comedy with enough of a mix of jokes and vibrant visuals to keep both the kids and the adults plenty entertained.

Available to stream on NOW and Sky Movies from 26 Dec. Check out our interview with Robinson and Maron right here:

BARBARIAN

2022’s best scary movie. That is all we’ll say about that one, because the less you know about it, the better.

Available on Disney+.

CHA CHA REAL SMOOTH

An emotional and intelligent rom-com that sees a man (Cooper Raiff, also the writer and director of the movie) who isn’t sure what he wants to do wit his life, fall in love with a slightly older woman (Dakota Johnson) who believes her life is too complicated to start a new relationship.

Available on Apple TV+.

CHIP N’ DALE: RESCUE RANGERS

Andy Samberg and John Mulaney voice the much-loved animated characters, who set off on a new adventure when an old cast-mate of theirs mysteriously goes missing. Shares a lot of DNA with Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which is about as high as praise gets in this genre.

Available on Disney+.

DO REVENGE

A very entertaining, darkly funny revenge thriller about two teenage girls (Maya Hawke and Camilla Mendes) who team up to do a “Strangers on a Train”, and help each other get their own back on the people who’ve wronged them.

Available on Netflix.

EMERGENCY

A hot topic comedy-drama-thriller, centring around three college students who discover a passed-out girl in their frat house. Worried they’ll be blamed for her condition, they try to move her to another location, only for the night to continue to spiral out of control.

Available on Prime Video.

FIRE ISLAND

A group of best friends descend upon the LGBTQ+ mecca that is Fire Ireland for the annual pride celebrations in search of passion and love.

Available on Disney+. Check out our interviews with the cast, director and writer right here:

FIRE OF LOVE

This profoundly moving documentary tells the love story of two of the world’s best volcano specialists, and how their relationship plays out against the backdrop of some of the most dangerous places on the planet.

Available on Disney+.

HATCHING

A supremely creepy horror movie from Finland, kicking off with a young girl discovering a strange bird’s egg in the forest. She brings it home to try to help it hatch, but discovers the creature inside isn’t what she was expecting it to be.

No longer in cinemas, coming to a streaming service soon.

I CAME BY

George Mackay and Hugh Bonneville co-star in this psychological thriller about a graffiti artist who breaks into the homes of London’s most rich and famous… but one night, he realises he has targeted the worst house possible.

Available on Netflix.

THE INNOCENTS

This Norwegian supernatural thriller tells the story of a group of young kids who all reveal they’ve been gifted with special powers, but try to keep that secret from their parents.

Available to rent on PVOD platforms (Rakuten TV, Google Play, etc.)

KIMI

Zoe Kravitz is incredibly good in this claustrophobic techno-thriller, playing an agoraphobic hacker who believes she has accidentally recorded evidence of a violent crime.

Available to rent on PVOD platforms (Rakuten TV, Google Play, etc.)

ORPHAN: FIRST KILL

The original movie is remember mostly for that bonkers third-act twist. This prequel shouldn’t have been this entertaining, but it managed to do so by ramping up the bonkers-ness, and Julia Stiles is having a BLAST here.

Available to rent on PVOD platforms (Rakuten TV, Google Play, etc.), coming to Paramount+ in Early 2023.

SPIRITED

Will it be remembered as one of the best Christmas movies ever? Probably not. But we still get Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds at their most likeable, singing and dancing and insulting their way through a very entertaining two hours.

Available on Apple TV+.

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS

With the likes of The White Lotus and Succession, we really do love to watch the super-rich misbehaving in the worst possible way. So when a luxury cruise liner goes down and the mega-wealthy on board are left to fend for themselves, things go badly very quickly.

Available to buy on PVOD platforms (Rakuten TV, Google Play, etc.)

WATCHER

Scream queen Maika Monroe (It Follows, The Guest) stars in this creepy psychological thriller, having moved to a European city with her husband. Not knowing the language, she finds acclimatising difficult, and she begins to fear that a man in her apartment block has started following her.

No longer in cinemas, coming to a streaming service soon.

THE WOMAN KING

Based on the incredible true story of an all-female warrior clan (headed by Viola Davis here, delivering yet another superb performance), who protect the nation of Dahomey from 19th century invaders.

No longer in cinemas, coming to a streaming service soon. Check out our interview with Davis and her co-star Thuso Mbedu right here:

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

Sometimes great movies just hit you at the exact right time in your life. Anyone ever questioning their position and direction in the world will relate HARD to this Norwegian comedy drama, following the trials and tribulations of one young woman.

Available to rent on PVOD platforms (Rakuten TV, Sky Store, etc.)

X

If Tarantino wanted to make a love letter to ’70s slasher movies, this would likely be the end result. Mia Goth is astoundingly good as one of the porn actors on a movie set in the middle of nowhere, which happens to be owned by some very religious, very violent folk.

Available on Prime Video.

YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER

A very good Irish scary movie, in which a young girl comes to believe that her troubled mother has been swapped out by an evil entity.

Available on Netflix. Check out our interview with the director and star of the movie right here:
