An ’80s cult favourite is among the movies on TV tonight

This movie about a car with a mind of its own brought two horror legends together.

While it may not be quite the weekend yet, why not chill on the sofa tonight with one of these fine movies.

Christine – Horror Channel – 9pm

In our pick for tonight, an awkward and unpopular teenage boy (Keith Gordon, who grew up to be a very acclaimed TV director) buys a strange car with an evil mind of its own and his nature starts to change to reflect it.

Based on a Stephen King novel of the same name with a great premise, this 1983 flick from John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing) manages to be both atmospheric and creepy yet slyly funny and fast-paced.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – Film Four – 9pm

While audience and critical reaction to the Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy was mixed, this final installment is the most action-packed and energetic of The Hobbit movies.

Street Kings – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

David Ayer (End of Watch, Suicide Squad) directs a script from crime writer James Ellroy (L.A. Confidential) about an undercover cop (Keanu Reeves) implicated in the murder of a fellow officer who struggles to clear his name.

Alfie – True Movies – 9pm

This acclaimed swinging 60’s set comedy-drama centres on an unrepentant ladies’ man (Michael Caine) who gradually begins to understand the consequences of his lifestyle.

Viva Las Vegas – BBC Four – 10.30pm

One of Elvis Presley’s most popular and iconic films, the King plays a racing driver who arrives in Vegas to prepare for its first grand prix where he falls in love.

Magnum Force – Turner Classic Movies – 11.15pm

The first of four sequels to classic Dirty Harry, Clint Eastwood returns as the title cop who this time is on the trail of vigilante police officers who are not above going beyond the law to kill the city’s undesirables.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story – Film Four – 11.50pm

Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn headline one of the silliest but funniest films of the 21st century. “Effin’ A, Cotton.”
