The film is also about to be added to streaming.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 24 June) is Buffalo Soldiers, the 2001 black comedy war drama starring Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix (Joker).

Set on an American Army base in 1989, as the Berlin Wall is about to fall, the film follows a group of US soldiers who "steal, drink, fight, and make, take, and sell drugs".

Elwood (Phoenix) is the brains behind the criminal operation, easily duping his superior (Ed Harris). But with the arrival of the new sergeant (Scott Glenn), everything changes.

"The sergeant cracks down; Elwood retaliates by dating his daughter and attempting a big weapons-for-drugs deal," the plot synopsis adds.

Based on the novel of the same name by Robert O'Connor, the cast of Buffalo Soldiers also includes Dean Stockwell, Elizabeth McGovern, Idris Elba and Michael Peña.

Holding a 73% Rotten Tomatoes score, Dallas Morning News described the movie as "a sharp, savagely funny look at the Army during peacetime with 'nothing to kill but time'."

Many critics drew comparisons between the film and the earlier war satire M*A*S*H.

Buffalo Soldiers is on TV tonight/tomorrow morning on Film4 at 1am. It will also be available on Channel 4's website after it airs.
