Massive Derry Girls mural to be created in Derry to celebrate the terrific comedy

Derry Girls tour

After a terrible week for the city, this is great news.

Filmed in Derry. Created by a Derry woman. Starring people from Derry. Celebrating the Derry accent.

The only way that Derry Girls could get even more Derry is if Season 2 featured cameos from Dana, James McClean, and Nadine Coyle (she’s rumoured to actually be starring in it).

Oh yeah, a few tunes from The Undertones wouldn’t go amiss either.

Since being added to Netflix, Derry Girls is now a worldwide phenomenon. It’s magic lies in the fact that while it’s a very local story, the writing resonates with everyone.

Simply put, the four girls – and the wee English fella – are lovable idiots that just go about their daily lives, but they’re all shaped and moulded by the people and the city around them.

Aside from all the laughs and one-liners, Lisa McGee’s comedy also offered a small but incredibly powerful glimpse at the world around Erin and co. as The Troubles developed.

Ultimately, Derry Girls represents the very best about life on Foyleside and in a difficult week for those in the county, and the city, the news that a large mural of the cast is set to be created is very welcome.

The mural is being developed by Channel 4’s in-house creative agency, 4Creative, who will be working with UV Arts, a local non-profit social enterprise group, to create the portrait of Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and James.

The mural is set to be painted onto an entire side of the Badger’s Bar building in Derry.

Unlike the moment when the entire Quinn family were unsure if the mural near their home was of skis or a rifle, we think that this piece of art is going to be clear for all to see.

The public artwork is part of the promotional campaign for Season 2 of the wonderful comedy, rumoured to be airing in March, and it’s bound to be a popular attraction in the city.

James Walker, Head of Marketing at Channel 4, said: “We are incredibly proud of the Derry Girls series. Using the skills and artistry of the UV Arts team, in conjunction with 4Creative, we’re kicking off our marketing campaign with a great a piece of artwork that not only pays tribute to Derry city’s culture, people and their spirit, it also brings the mischievous and funny characters of Derry Girls to life.”
