Amazon set to spend $1billion on a new TV show that they hope can rival Game of Thrones

After acquiring the Lord of the Rings, they're going even bigger.

Much like Daenerys' obsession with taking the Iron Throne, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is really hoping to find a marquee TV show that can rival Game of Thrones in terms of its global and cultural impact. As stated previously, Amazon has already acquired the rights to make a Lord of the Rings TV show and they're not stopping there. Deadline has reported that the studio is also developing a slew of other high-profile titles including Robert Jordan's superb Wheel of Time books, Stephen King's The Dark Tower series and other titles such as; Ringworld, Lazarus, Snow Crash and Iain M. Banks’ classic sci-fi series, Culture. Well, the Financial Times have now reported that Amazon will be adapting the popular Chinese book The Three-Body Problem into a three-season show at the whopping cost of $1bn. The Three-Body Problem is a 2008 sci-fi novel by Liu Cixin. It’s set in China and revolves around aliens that are about to invade Earth. The novel was both a best-seller and a huge critical success, earning Cixin a Hugo Award, among other literary prizes. The Dark Forest and Death's End are the next installments. To put things into perspective, Entertainment Weekly reported that HBO spent $10m per episode during Season 6 of Game of Thrones. While money is no indication of quality, it's clear that Amazon is desperately hoping to fill the void when Game of Thrones ends. This being said, there are plenty of new shows that are also being developed in Westeros. With so many new fantasy TV shows being developed, viewers will be spoiled for choice.
