It's maybe the most influential TV series ever.

Prime Video has just added Twin Peaks, the legendary mystery horror drama show created by David Lynch and Mark Frost.

Having first premiered in 1990, the series takes place in the fictional, titular Pacific Northwest town. The seemingly idyllic area is rocked by the killing of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), the teenage Homecoming Queen.

Quirky FBI special agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) is subsequently dispatched to the town to investigate the death. He gradually unearths a disturbing darkness lurking under Twin Peaks' tranquil facade.

Boasting an idiosyncratic mix of dark detective fiction, surreal horror elements, and offbeat humour, most of which hadn't been seen on TV before, the show was a surprise hit upon release and quickly gathered a devoted cult fanbase.

With several of its episodes helmed by Lynch himself, Twin Peaks is often credited, alongside Miami Vice, as one of the first television series with a cinematic style.

Also, if you've ever watched a show about a murder in a quiet, secluded, tight-knit community that leads to hidden secrets coming to light (Broadchurch, Fortitude, The Killing, Mare of Easttown, True Detective, the recent The Dark), it owes a debt to what Frost and Lynch created.

How to watch Twin Peaks

Prime Video in Ireland and the UK has just added Twin Peaks seasons one and two.

This means Irish and UK viewers will have to rent its movie prequel, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and stream its acclaimed 2017 reboot series on Mubi and Paramount+.

US viewers can also watch Twin Peaks S1 and S2 on those services.
