Belfast Airport renamed in honour of Game of Thrones

Carl Kinsella

“Welcome to Westeros.”

That’s the message that will greet tourists who land this morning in what was once Belfast Airport. The hub will be renamed Westeros Airport for the remainder of the festive season.

Much of the flagship HBO TV series is filmed in Northern Ireland, and its sets and locations have proved an enormous boon for the Northern Ireland economy.

While the show doesn’t solely film in Belfast (it also has locations in Causeway Coast and Glens, north of the capital city, as well as south into Quoile and the Mourne Mountains in County Down) it seems fitting that travellers to the city should be reminded that they’re setting foot on hallowed Game of Thrones territory.

Moyra Lock, Head of Marketing at Northern Ireland Screen said “HBO’s official re-naming of the Belfast’s International Airport is a fantastic opportunity to cement Northern Ireland as the home of Game of Thrones.  The show has spearheaded a growing screen tourism phenomenon and we’re delighted to welcome all fans and travellers officially to Westeros this December.”

Graham Keddie, managing director of Belfast International Airport added “As the principal airport for Northern Ireland, we look forward to welcoming the hundreds-of-thousands of passengers, as well as meeters and greeters that will be travelling through the terminal over the festive period and will be able to visit Westeros, right here, at Belfast International Airport.”
