best movies on tv tonight

An eclectic mix of a Friday evening.

It’s Friday, Friday. Gotta get down on Friday. Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend, right?

If you’re not as enthusiastic as Rebecca Black about the last day of the working week for most of you and would rather just chill out and watch a movie instead, here’s what’s on offer on this Friday evening.

Die Hard 4.0, E4, 9pm

Ridiculously over-the-top yet still somewhat enjoyable fourth entry in the Die Hard series, arriving a full 22 years after the brilliant Die Hard with a Vengeance.

American Pie: The Wedding, ITV2, 9pm

The gang are all grown up as Jim and Michelle tie the knot in a flick that doesn’t live up to the first and second American Pie movies but is still a harmless way to pass an hour and a half.

The Mechanic, ITV4, 9pm

Jason Statham has revenge on his mind and it’s nothing to do with a dodgy exhaust; he’s out to get the guys who killed his close friend and mentor, played here by Donald Sutherland. Passable Statham fare.

Superbad, Dave, 9pm

12 years on from its release, the film that launched the careers of Jonah Hill and Michael Cera stands up as one of the best comedies since the turn of the millennium, even if it is your 60th time watching it.

The Frighteners, Syfy, 9pm

Michael J Fox is hardly the scariest person in the world, but this 1996 horror is decent enough to pass the time if you’ve nothing better to do.

Jaws, RTÉ 2, 9.35pm

On the box so often now that if you don’t see it tonight, you’ll probably have three more opportunities before the end of next week. A classic that needs no introduction.

Cowboy, TG4, 10.30pm

If Westerns are your thing, this 1958 effort starring Glenn Ford and Jack Lemmon is worth a look.

Cobra, Virgin Media Two, 10.30pm

“Crime is a disease, meet the cure.” The cure in this case? Sylvester Stallone. Need we say any more?
