best movies on tv tonight

Friday night is movie night…

… and while we couldn’t speak with a huge amount of confidence about the quality of movies on the box every night this week, you’ll be glad to know tonight’s selection is more than decent.

This evening’s cast, featuring Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake, Blake Lively and more, is as star-studded as you’re going to get; we’d be surprised if at least one of the options below doesn’t take your fancy.

Presenting your entertainment for this Friday night:

Friends With Benefits – Comedy Central, 9pm

Only in the movies could someone have a hook-up buddy as attractive as Mila Kunis or Justine Timberlake respectively.

While it follows a fairly predictable path, it’s funny, charming and there’s great chemistry between the two leads. Perfect popcorn viewing for a Friday night.

Terminator Genisys – E4, 9pm

Not even the presence of Emilia Clarke at the height of her Game of Thrones fame can save this ill-advised addition to the Terminator series.

Happy Death Day – Film4, 9pm

A very clever take on the traditional horror genre that’s a lot funnier than the title might suggest.

The Nice Guys – RTÉ2, 9.35pm

Set in 1970s LA, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling form the ultimate of buddy cop duos in a comedy that is far more hit than miss.

The Long Riders – TG4, 10.15pm

TG4 is the place to go for westerns these days and this 1980 flick – featuring four sets of real-life brothers (Keaches, Carradines, Quaids and Guests) playing four sets of on-screen siblings – certainly belongs in the top tier.

The Shallows – Film4, 10.50pm

A surfer, played by Blake Lively, tries to survive an attack by a great white shark.

If you can stomach the subject matter, it’s fairly compelling stuff.

Murder in the Outback – Virgin Media One, 11pm

Based on a true story, this is pretty much a Ronseal job in that it does exactly what it says on the tin.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
