Here’s how Bandersnatch was made.

Netflix’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch certainly opened many doors for the future of television, through its innovative use of a choose-your-own-adventure structure — making it a half-television, half-video game hybrid.

Released on Friday 28 December last year, it instantly became one of television’s most talked-about spectacles of the year.

Now, the online streaming giant has released a behind the scenes video — featuring interviews with creator Charlie Brooker, executive producer Annabel Jones and director of the episode David Slade.

The interview reveals that Netflix approached Brooker with the idea of an interactive episode, rather than the other way around.

Brooker admits:

“Netflix asked us if we’d be interested in doing an interactive story ever. My initial thought was ‘No, I don’t want to do that.’ And then annoyingly I had an idea that would fit.”

Brooker then goes on to describe just how complicated it was to write a story with so many different permutations.
