Here's everything we know so far about the hit sci-fi show's return.

Netflix has confirmed that its hit sci-fi series Black Mirror will be returning for an eighth season.

Widely regarded as one of the best shows of the past 15 years and credited with revitalising the anthology TV format, most of Black Mirror's episodes are stand-alone stories that explore technology and its side effects.

Indeed, the title of the series refers to the dark reflective surface of a smartphone or computer screen.

The series' creator, Charlie Brooker, recently spoke to Netflix's news website Tudum about S7 picking up three nominations at this year's Golden Globes.

Black Mirror secured a nod in the Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television category.

Paul Giamatti and Rashida Jones also picked up acting nominations for their performances in the Season 7 episodes “Eulogy” and “Common People” respectively.

During the Tudum chat, Brooker said that Black Mirror will return, stating:

"I can confirm that Black Mirror will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it. So, that’s exciting.

"That chunk of my brain has already been activated and is whirring away."

Tudum then asked: "Putting together a season is like making an album, so I’m curious what kind of tune this one will be?"

In response, the creator said: "It’s a useful thought experiment when approaching a new story. I’ll often think of: 'Well, what haven’t we done yet, and what tone am I looking for? … Where does this track come on the album, and what musical direction are we going to go into?' We’ll find out."

He then joked: "Very unlikely you’ll ever see a Black Mirror hoedown."

Black Mirror fans may be waiting a long time for season eight, as Brooker is currently working on another four-part crime thriller series for Netflix.

The untitled show is set between the fictional northern city of Bleakford and the streets of London.

"I can’t even tell you what it's called yet, but it’s very much not Black Mirror. I can say that. It’s a very, very different thing," he told Tudum, about this separate project.

"The most detective show of all time. It’s a deeply profound and profoundly serious crime thriller.

"I love a crime thriller. I love Columbo. I love Seven. I’m a big fan of shows like The Bridge, The Killing, and Knives Out.

"Obviously, they come in different flavours, and I think it’s fair to say we’ve kind of drawn inspiration from every single one of them."

All seven seasons of Black Mirror are streaming on Netflix now.
