15 brilliant songs that featured in some classic TV adverts

Paul Moore

Remember any of these?

While listening to my iPod recently, I stumbled upon the brilliant ‘To The Bright and Shining Sun’ by The Walls, a track that I first heard on the famous AIB advert from a few years ago. This got me thinking about some other famous tunes that featured on memorable adverts. Here’s a few that came to mind.

Shaggy – Mr Bombastic

Brand: Levis

While we’ve got no fecking idea idea about what role a claymation man would have in selling jeans, this is instantly memorable for anyone that grew up in the ’90s.

Free- All Right Now

Brand: Wrigley’s

Sales in chewing gum probably sky rocketed after this advert because it’s almost intrinsically linked with being suave and smooth. Just don’t choke on it!

Placebo- Nancy Boy

Brand: MTV

Remember when MTV actually played music and were culturally relevant? This is the perfect tune to express all those feelings of teenage angst.

Marvin Gaye – I Heard it Through the Grapevine

Brand: Levis

Looking back now, it’s remarkable how much one company has managed to bring so many classic ’60s music songs back into the mainstream.

Louis Armstrong – We Have All the Time in the World

Brand: Guinness

A track that’s perfectly fitting when compared to the seemingly endless time that it takes to pull the perfect pint of Guinness.

The Dandy Warhols – Bohemian Like You

Brand: Vodafone

The moment when you hear the old fashioned ringtone in this ad really makes you feel old, doesn’t it?

Nick Drake – Pink Moon

Brand: Volkswagen

This was the the car manufacturers first online ad and reintroduced the iconic folk artist to a new generation of music fans. He remains the master.

Mic Christopher – Heyday

Brand: Guinness

Yes, that is Michael Fassbender in this video that provided a small snippet of Mic Christopher’s unique and remarkable talent. An Irish artist that was gone far too soon.

The Zombies – Time of the Season

Brand: Bulmers

The ad definitely did it’s job because I instantly equate this tune and Donovan – Sunshine Superman with drinking cider in the sun.

Lenny Kravitz – Fly Away

Brand: Peugeot 206

That riff and rousing chorus almost make you feel like emptying your bank account and buying a Peugeot. Then again, you could have just bought the single and saved yourself a heap of cash.

Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer

Brand: Vauxhall

How did I forget that Vauxhall used to end every single one of their adverts with the brilliant riff from Eric Clapton – Layla?

Santigold – Creator

Brand: VO5 Extreme Style gel

This tune is still one of the most intriguing and unique intros to any song that I’ve heard on an advert. The bass drop is incredible and it made me yearn for Shazam to be invented years before it actually was.

Eagles of Death Metal – Don’t Speak

Brand: Nike

Don’t we all dream of this life? The innovative first-person perspective on this advert make sit stand out above every other famous effort that the sportswear giant has done.

Feist – 1234

Brand: Apple

Apple launched a global takeover of music that featured some really memorable tunes. Jet, U2 and this song instantly come to mind.

Babylon Zoo – Spaceman.

Brand: Levis

Be honest, everyone bought this single on the back of that chorus alone. It’s just a shame that the remaining 90% of the song was utter garbage.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
