Cillian Murphy has confessed that he celebrated his Best Actor nomination at the Academy Awards yesterday (January 23) with a cup of tea and a slice of cake at his mam’s house.

Oppenheimer received a massive 13 nominations for the Oscars, the most of any films this year.

While Murphy received the nom for Best Actor, Nolan was also nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Emily Blunt received a nomination too, as did Robert Downey Jr. for Best Supporting Actor.

Murphy himself learned of his Best Actor nom from Cork City where he was enjoying cake and tea with his parents.

He told Variety: “It was already organised for me. We’ve had a few days off and I’ve been at home, which has been very, very pleasant.

“I’m actually in my parents’ house in Cork city. I was with my parents and my wife today. So that was really nice.”

The Irish acting giant was in his childhood kitchen when the nominations were revealed.

He said: “We had a cup of tea and a slice of cake. It was quite nice. My mum made a sponge cake. It was very tasty.”

Speaking about the success of the film, Murphy claimed that “superlatives fail” him.

He said: “Words don’t really do it justice. I think the superlatives fail you at this point. I’m so truly honoured and kind of overwhelmed. But most of all, proud of the movie, and proud that it has achieved so much.

“It exceeded all of our expectations, any of any of us who are involved in making this movie.”

Murphy is now a massive favourite to pick up the Best Actor at the Academy Awards.
