A classic sports drama is among the movies on TV tonight

It’s Thursday.

It is not quite the weekend but it is close.

To make the time fly quicker, why not check out one of these fine films on TV this evening (21 April).

Mama – Horror Channel – 9pm

Jessica Chastain plays a punk rocker in this decent supernatural horror from the director of It and the writer of Luther.

V for Vendetta – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Natalie Portman and a masked Hugo Weaving star in this strong adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel.

The Blues Brothers – ITV 4 – 9pm

This cult musical action-comedy centres on a man just released from prison (John Belushi) who puts together his old band to save the Catholic home where he and his brother (Dan Aykroyd) were raised.

The Intruder – Film4 – 9pm

This psychological thriller focuses on a couple (Michael Ealy and Meagan Good) who buy a country house, only to realize its previous owner (Dennis Quaid) refuses to let it go.

King Kong – BBC Four – 10pm

This 1933 monster movie is the first entry in the King Kong franchise.

No One Lives – Horror Channel – 11pm

In this violent horror-thriller, a gang of ruthless highway killers kidnap a wealthy couple (one of which is played by Luke Evans) traveling cross country only to discover things are not what they seem.

Misery – Film4 – 11.05pm

Kathy Bates won the Best Actress Oscar for her role as a scarily obsessed fan of an author (James Caan) in this tense-as-hell Stephen King adaptation.

The Thing from Another World – BBC Four – 11.35pm

The ’50s black-and-white sci-fi horror was famously remade by John Carpenter as The Thing.

Rocky – ITV4 – 11.40pm

In this Oscar Best Picture winner, a small-time Philadelphia boxer (Sylvester Stallone, who also wrote the movie) gets a supremely rare chance to fight the world heavyweight champion.

A sports drama that spawned eight sequels, the original 1976 movie remains iconic on account of its terrific rags to riches tale, the flawless performances and of course, the rousing score.

I Am Bruce Lee – Sky Arts – 11.40pm

A documentary about the life and career of the legendary actor and martial artist.

Jarhead – Turner Classic Movies – 11.45pm

Jake Gyllenhaal leads the cast of this underrated Gulf War drama.
