Coronation Street to feature its first male rape storyline

Carl Kinsella

Coronation Street, the world’s longest-running soap opera in production, has dealt with many things over the years.

The iconic soap will be tackling extremely dark subject matter in 2018, it has emerged, as plans for a plotline that will feature male rape were leaked.

The Manchester Evening News has reported that character David Platt, a fan favourite who has been part of the show for 17 years, will end up going for a night out with a new character — Josh — only to wake up in the morning and find that he has been drugged and assaulted.

It’s the first time in its 57 year history that the show will tackle the sensitive subject of male rape, and it is rumoured that much of the storyline will revolve around how David copes with the aftermath, the questions over whether to report what happened to him, and how to deal with the fact that Josh is still around.

According to one insider,  “With Josh still on the street, David struggles to deal with the shame of what has happened to him. This is a big storyline for Jack and everyone is determined to get it right.”

The storyline will air next year.
