The new Love Island and 8 more new movies & shows to watch this weekend

Horror, Irish drama, the MCU, true-life murder documentaries and loads more are on the menu for this weekend.

Vin Diesel, Jamie Foxx, Daniel Kaluuya, Vera Farminga and loads more feature in this week’s new arrivals.

To kick things off, here are the movies which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 12 August.

NOPE

Jordan Peele, the director of Get Out and Us, is back to spook us all once again. This time a brother and sister believe that are being tormented by a mostly-unseen unidentified flying object at their isolated horse ranch. As we mentioned previously, it has the best scary scene of 2022 so far.

HOLE IN THE HEAD

This new Irish drama tells the story of a mute amateur filmmaker, who also suffers from missing time. He hires local actors to play his parents in a series of recreated home movies in order to investigate their unsolved disappearance 25 years earlier.

I JUST KILLED MY DAD

Anthony Templet shot his father and never denied it. But why he did is a complex question with profound implications that go far beyond one family.

The documentary is available to watch on Netflix right now.

I AM GROOT

A collection of five short films, with Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper reprising their voice roles as Groot and Rocket, respectively. We’ll see young Groot take off on adventures around the galaxy, meeting new wacky characters along the way.

All five episodes are available on Disney+ right now.

FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL

Based on actual events from Hurricane Katrina, this mini-series tells the story of the exhausted caregivers at a New Orleans hospital who were forced to make heart-wrenching decisions amidst the storm’s aftermath.

The first three episodes are available to watch on Apple TV+ on Friday, 12 August.

A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN

Abbi Jacobson (Broad City), Chanté Adams (A Journal For Jordan) and D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place) headline this reimagining of the hit 1992 sports comedy-drama.

All eight episodes will arrive on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, 12 August.

DAY SHIFT

An LA vampire hunter (Jamie Foxx) has a week to come up with the cash to pay for his kid’s tuition and braces. Trying to make a living these days just might kill him.

The movie is available to watch on Netflix on Friday, 12 August.

COSMIC LOVE

The makers of Love Island embark on a new reality series, this time matching up potential life partners based entirely on their astrological symbols… to see if love is literally written in the stars.

All 10 episodes will debut on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, 12 August.

THE PRINCESS

Coming from the Academy-Award winning makers of Searching for Sugar Man and Man on Wire, this powerful documentary uses archival footage to take a unique look into the life and death of Princess Diana, and the impact she has continued to have on the public and its perception of the monarchy.

The documentary is available to watch with a NOW Entertainment Membership from Sunday, 14 August.
