First things first, the show is created by Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated screenwriter and director Scott Frank, Academy Award-winner Steven Soderbergh, and executive producer Casey Silver.

The official synopsis of the series is:

Notorious criminal Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels) and his gang of outlaws are on a mission of revenge against Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), a son-like protégé who betrayed the brotherhood. While on the run, Roy seeks refuge with hardened widower Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery), an outcast herself, in a worn-down, isolated mining town of La Belle, NM — governed mainly by women. When word reaches La Belle that Griffin is headed their way, the town bands together to defend against the murderous gang in a lawless western frontier.

The show opens with a classic western scene, an injured rider making it to town and having to be seen by the town doctor. Did we mention there was no anaesthetic in those times? You’ll know what we’re talking about if you watch the opening episode.

But don’t take our word for it, a lot of critics have been very impressed by the series.

Vulture wrote that, “Godless is so good, you’ll like it even if you don’t like westerns.”

They added: “Replete with gorgeously infinite landscapes and so many fascinating characters that you’ll change your mind every five minutes about which one is your favorite, Godless is a wonderfully modern addition to the genre that’s simultaneously classic and traditional in all the right ways.”

USA Today wrote, “It may be a simple story of good versus evil, but there’s a reason that formulaworks. And good Godless, it works here.”

IndieWire was impressed by the performances of the cast including Jack O’Connell, Mary Agnes and Jeff Daniels. They wrote: “Yes, Mary Agnes is a breath of fresh air every time her cut-to-the-chase persona moseys on screen, and yes, Wever — the Emmy-winning star of ‘Nurse Jackie’ — is stupendous in the role. But so is the rest of the cast, including Michelle Dockery, Jack O’Connell, Scoot McNairy, and Emmy-winner Jeff Daniels, all of whom build their characters over longer periods of time.”
