Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 20 February) is Garage, the 2007 drama directed by Lenny Abrahamson and written by Mark O'Halloran.
The same writing-directing duo behind the modern classic Adam & Paul, Garage revolves around Josie (Pat Shortt, The Banshees of Inisherin), a lonely man who has spent his entire adult life working as the caretaker of a crumbling petrol station on the outskirts of a small town in the mid-west of Ireland.
He finds his spirits lifted when David (Conor J. Ryan), the son of his boss' girlfriend, comes to work with him.
"Garage is the story of Josie’s hapless search for intimacy over the course of a summer which sees his life changed forever," the plot synopsis adds.
Co-starring Anne-Marie Duff (Bad Sisters), Garage earned rave reviews for Shortt's against-type dramatic performance and the movie's dark and unflinching portrait of rural Irish life and social isolation.
In fact, some critics upon its release called it "the best Irish film ever made".
Garage is airing on TV tonight on RTÉ One at 11.15pm. It's also available to rent on Apple TV.
