A direct sequel to Donnie Darko could be on the way

We're dying to see this already!

It seems like it truly is the era for long-awaited film sequels.

Donnie Darko is a film that you definitely won’t forget in a hurry.

Richard Kelly’s 2001 film revolved around troubled teen Donnie Darko as he struggled with visions of the upcoming apocalypse, as foretold by his rabbit figure Frank.

The dark and twisted sci-fi film both thrilled and chilled viewers upon its release, and as the years have passed, it’s cult status has only grown.

Considering the fact that films like Trainspotting and Ghostbusters have been given sequels or reboots, it only seems fair that Donnie Darko follow suit.

Speaking to HMV, director of the film Richard Kelly spoke about possibly doing a sequel to follow the original film – we’re just going to ignore the absolutely awful Samantha Darko film.

When asked about revisiting the world of Donnie, Kelly said: “I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it.”

Our commitment to Sparkle Motion hasn’t dwindled. Bring it on!
