Two of 2022’s best shows are available to stream in Ireland, they’re just sorta hidden

Rory Cashin

One has 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and the other features some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

We have talked about StarzPlay on JOE before, but considering it has recently added two of the biggest shows of 2022 (at least to those who have already seen them in the States), then it is time to bring it up again.

The streaming platform doesn’t have the publicity push equal to giants like Netflix or Disney+, and you properly have to go looking for it in order to discover the great shows it has made available to Irish customers.

Most smart TVs now have direct access to Rakuten TV, but if not, it is also available to download as an app, or you can simply open the website up on your laptop or mobile device.

It is on there you’ll find the StarzPlay section, which has a seven-day free trial period, and after that it will be €4.99 per month.

They have two of the best-reviewed new shows of the year, just in case you’d seen them mentioned around the Internet and thought to yourself, “Where I can see them in Ireland?”

STATION ELEVEN

98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Set 20 years after a flu pandemic resulted in the collapse of civilisation as we know it (yikes), a group of survivors who make a living as a travelling circus cross paths with a violent cult led by a man who has a direct link to one of the members of the troupe.

Mackenzie Davis, Himesh Patel, Lori Petty, David Wilmot, Gael Garcia Bernal, Timothy Simons and David Cross feature in the cast.

All 10 episodes are available to watch on StarzPlay right now.

GASLIT

86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

You might think that the Watergate scandal has been covered more than enough already by films and shows, but this new mini-series tells the event from the perspective of several people who have never had their stories told before. The political thriller focuses on socialite Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts), wife to Nixon’s loyal Attorney General, John N. Mitchell (Sean Penn), who was the first person to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s direct involvement with Watergate.

The series also features Dan Stevens, Betty Gilpin, Patton Oswalt, Chris Messina and is executive produced by Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot, Homecoming).

At the time of writing, the first two episodes are available to watch on StarzPlay, with the remainder of the series arriving weekly each Monday.
