Graham Norton has paid a lovely tribute to Terry Wogan at the Eurovision final

Raise a glass.

Eurovision 2016 is a particularly poignant one because it’s the first final to take place since the sad passing of the wonderfully gifted broadcaster Terry Wogan.

For many of us, the Limerick man will forever be synonymous with the event because his witty remarks, ironic comments and incredible sense of humour helped add something special to the festivities.

Cork’s own Graham Norton took over the announcing duties from Wogan in ’09, but he was eager to remember Wogan’s iconic legacy in the most fitting way possible.

As Swedish singer Frans prepared to take to the stage this evening, Norton shared a wonderful piece of advice that Wogan gave him ahead of his own Eurovision debut.

Here’s his story in full:

“Tonight’s Eurovision is a bittersweet one for many of us, because of course it is the first contest since the death of Sir Terry Wogan. Eight years ago when I was lucky enough to get this job of commentating, Sir Terry very kindly, graciously phoned me and the only bit of advice he gave me was, ‘don’t have a drink before song nine.’ Now, this is song nine…

“So whilst the crowd here cheer on their home boy, I would urge you back home to raise a cup, a mug, a glass, whatever you have in front of you and give thanks for the man who was, and always will be the voice of Eurovision. Sir Terry, this is song nine.”

Terry Wogan may be gone, but he’ll never be forgotten, especially on Eurovision night.
