Some of these might be a big surprise.
With rumours circulating that there’s set to be a mini Game of Thrones reunion when the cast gather at Comic-Con, it appears that there’s going to be one last farewell to Westeros.
Granted, the prequel show is set to film its pilot episode this summer, so there’s plenty for fans to look forward to, but with the embers of the Iron Throne still burning out, it’s left to King Bran and his small council to rebuild the Six Kingdoms – we’re still not used to writing that!
After all, Sansa is now The Queen in the North – THE QUEEN IN THE NORTH, THE QUEEN IN THE NORTH! – after she managed to negotiate independent status for the largest Kingdom in Westeros.
While Season 8 didn’t quite hit the high standards of previous seasons, there was still plenty to enjoy and in terms of actors that went out with a bang, there’s no faulting Emilia Clarke’s performance because she did an awful lot with very little time.
We’ve already discussed the rushed nature of the final six episodes, but Clarke’s performance, especially in the final two episodes, is rightfully being put forward for Emmy consideration.
Truth be told, she was probably the strongest actor this season.
It’s worth stating that these aren’t the final Emmy nominations, but rather the categories that HBO would like Season 8 of Game of Thrones to be considered for.
Jon Snow was definitely marginalised in the last season – his dialogue mainly consisted of him saying “I don’t want it” (Iron Throne) and “She’s my Queen” – but HBO also hope that the Emmys give Kit Harington a nod for his performance.
Elsewhere, there’s support for Alfie Allen, Pilou Asbaek, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Richard Dormer, Gwendoline Christie, Carice Van Houten, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, and the massively-underused Lena Headey.
HBO would like Benioff and Weiss to be nominated in the categories of Outstanding Writing and Directing For A Drama Series – both for the season finale, “The Iron Throne” – while “The Long Night” aka the Battle of Winterfell is being put forward for seven accolades.
Surprisingly, one of the most consistent episodes in Season 8, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, isn’t up for anything.
Throughout the show’s history, Game of Thrones has frequently been the show to beat at the Emmys – in 2016, it became the most awarded series in Emmy Awards history, with a total of 38 wins – however we think that Chernobyl is going to absolutely dominate an awful lot of categories.
Truth be told, if Craig Mazin’s drama wins everything, we wouldn’t complain.
