A rip-roaring Ireland-shot action adventure movie is now streaming at home

Our second of three recommendations (you can read the previous one here) is for How to Train Your Dragon. This is the excellent 2025 live-action remake of the hit animated adventure film of the same name from 2010.

Shot in beautiful Northern Ireland, the movie stars Mason Thames (The Black Phone) as Hiccup, a Viking teenager living on the small island of Berk, which dragons frequently attack. These creatures often steal the villagers' livestock and endanger the community.

Hiccup's rugged, tough father, Stoick (Gerard Butler, reprising his role from the animated film), leads the people of Berk as they try to stave off and slay the dragons. Though Hiccup is deemed too weak to fight, he builds mechanical contraptions to try and help his dad in his quest, something Stoick looks down upon.

One day, Hiccup's inventions result in him capturing a dragon. Unable to bring himself to kill it, the teen names the creature Toothless, and the pair become friends.

Though the people of Berk have been led to believe that dragons are inherently evil, Hiccup learns from Toothless that this isn't the case. He struggles, however, to convince his fellow villagers of this truth, particularly as he is forced to undergo dragon-fighting training alongside several of his peers, one of whom - the fearless warrior Astrid (Nico Parker, The Last of Us) - he has a crush on.

How to Train Your Dragon (2025) retains the exciting story, lovable characters, and heart-warming message of the original animation. At its core, this is a tale about the importance of being kind and empathetic to others, rather than letting fear and stereotypes divide.

Indeed, it's incredibly satisfying to watch Hiccup use his knowledge of dragons, garnered from treating Toothless with compassion and respect, to outsmart and earn the respect of both his more pugnacious peers, during their fight training, and the wider community of Berk.

Also, there is an added excitement and thrill to the adventure by having real humans interact with a gorgeous but natural environment (courtesy of Northern Ireland), as well as still-stylised but slightly more authentic-looking dragons.

This is best exemplified by a lengthy flying sequence at the midway point involving Astrid, Hiccup and Toothless that genuinely does feel exciting, hair-raising and majestic all at once.

Also featuring amongst its cast Ireland's own Ruth Codd (Netflix's House of Ushers, The Celebrity Traitors), How to Train Your Dragon was the eighth-highest-grossing movie worldwide in 2025. A sequel is set to hit cinemas next year, which was also filmed in NI.
