Your eyes are going to go square…

We Irish certainly do love our television. From Breaking Bad to the Six One News, it seems that we simply can’t get enough of that wonderful telly stuff.

According to a report in The Irish Times, the latest figures from TAM Ireland show that we, as a nation, spend an average of three and half hours watching television every day, a figure which is an increase of 14 minutes per day since 2012.

Most surprising though is the statistic that a whopping 92 per cent of what we watch is live, a remarkable figure that clearly shows that, in spite of on-demand streaming services such as Netflix, Sky and Amazon Prime (and maybe some, ahem, not-so-legal means of viewing) viewers still opting to watch TV as it’s laid out in our RTÉ Guide.

It’s also very likely that, as well as having the tellybox on in front of you each evening, you’ll also have *JOE takes a deep breath* your phone, your iPad, your laptop, your notebook, your Chromebook, your Game Boy and your Nokia 3310 all sitting around you within arm’s reach, each device attempting to show a different episode of Golden Girls. Ah, Blanche…

Interestingly, the measurement period for this most recent set of results was actually from January to May of this year, so we’re really looking forward to seeing the undoubtedly huge viewing figures as a result of the Fifa World Cup, a period of time during which football fans all over the country refused to leave the comfort of their sofas for days on end.

Now go outside and get some fresh air you reality show, TV-obsessed robots…
