One of 2024’s most shocking movies is now available to stream at home

Stephen Porzio

The much-discussed film was only out in cinemas last July.

In a Violent Nature, one of 2024’s most talked about horror movies, is now available to watch at home.

Available to stream on the service Shudder, the film revolves around Johnny – a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year-old crime – who is resurrected.

This happens when a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombed his corpse, causing Johnny to become hellbent on retrieving the item.

“The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back — along with anyone in his way,” the plot synopsis reads.

Released in Irish cinemas only last July, In a Violent Nature generated much-discussion due to its hyper violence and for the way the film’s events are largely observed from the killer’s perspective, as opposed to his victims.

Emphasising static long take shots and featuring no musical score, the viewer sticks with Johnny as he embarks on his murderous quest to get his locket back.

Praised for its visceral thrills and in how it forces viewers to reconsider and reckon with the violence inflicted in typical slasher films, In a Violent Nature earned very positive reviews from critics – earning a 79% Rotten Tomatoes score.

It was also a bit of a box office hit, grossing $4 million on a budget that has been reported to be less than $500,000.

As such a sequel has already been greenlit.

You can read some of the glowing reviews for In a Violent Nature right here:

The Atlantic: “Nash wants the viewer to engage with the pure terror of what’s going on just as much as he wants them to sit in the tedium of it. The result is a film as worthy as its predecessors – and one of the most unsettling examples of the genre I’ve seen in years.”

The Australian: “It is so ruthlessly, mercilessly, casually, relentlessly, violent that it will deter lots of viewers, which is understandable but unfortunate for the director because I think he is making a point about the slasher movie genre.”

Bloody Disgusting: “A fascinating arthouse horror experiment that plays more like a minimalist slice-of-life feature with a grim, gory twist.”

Salon.com: “The grossest, most elaborate kill-scenes I’ve ever seen in my life all fit seamlessly, where in other films a similar hodgepodge could fall flat amidst the chaos. This feels classic and completely new all at once.”

San Jose Mercury News: “There’s no doubt character development isn’t the film’s strong suit — nor one of its goals — but Johnny slays his way into the league of unstoppable, unforgettable killing machines.”

Variety: “Its stripped-down approach to a familiar gist has a distinctiveness that is impressive, and is sure to please fans who are always up for a new slasher film — but wish most of them weren’t so interchangeable.”

In a Violent Nature is streaming on Shudder in Ireland, the UK and the US right now.
