Stephen Porzio

The drama is executive produced by Martin Scorsese.

An Irish movie has been ranked in the number one spot on Sight and Sound’s top 50 films of 2021 list.

Co-produced by Irish production company Element Pictures, The Souvenir Part II took the top spot in the film magazine’s poll after over 1000 votes by more than 100 critics and contributors.

The movie is a sequel to the 2019 drama The Souvenir, which told the story of Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne), a young aspiring director in the UK in the ’80s.

The Souvenir Part II sees her attempt to make her graduation film in the aftermath of a tumultuous relationship.

Executive produced by Martin Scorsese and featuring Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Harris Dickinson (The King’s Man), Joe Alwyn (The Favourite), Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) in its cast, the movie has been a hit with critics and currently holds an impressive 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“[Writer-director Joanna] Hogg spotlights Julie’s burgeoning career in the film industry and a string of casual relationships in this beautifully sophisticated semi-autobiographical sequel,” Sight and Sound wrote.

The movie polled ahead of other acclaimed movies from around the world including Petite Maman, Drive My Car, Memoria (also featuring Tilda Swinton) and Titane, which rounded out the top five spots.
