JOE’s favourite action film scenes No.2: Arnold Schwarzenegger fights a plane in ‘Eraser’

Thanks to Lucozade Energy, we’re counting down our favourite action film scenes, and it wouldn’t be a right to leave Arnie out of proceedings.

Eraser is hardly a high quality action film in terms of script, dialgoue, acting…eh maybe we should stop this list before it gets too incriminating for poor Arnie & Co. Anyway, none of that stuff is really important in an action flick, what we’re really looking for is ridiculous over the top stunts and action scenes, with people dying or exploding or whatever, and Eraser had that in spades, and then some.

While narrowing down the scenes we wanted to use to illustrate our point, one stood out above the rest, mainly because it took place so high in the clouds, of course. We are of course referring to the scene where Arnold Schwarzenegger bravely takes on a plane, because that’s what you do when you’re face with a plane coming at you: just shoot it or whatever.

That’s not the only action scene, of course, there’s plenty more in this beast of a classic which is also an epic masterpiece, and we don’t say any of that lightly or with the slightest hint of irony. There’s a fairly ridiculous shoot out in a house which involves some bizarre grenades, general chaos and mayhem with people indiscriminately shooting everyone, and (SPOILER ALERT) our favourite scene is the final, closing scene outside the court room.

After catching the criminals and trying to get them to stand trial, Arnie smells a plot on their part that will have him six feet under, if they get their way. In order to avoid that, he decides to fake his own death, killing what must have been scores of innocent bystanders in the process. Totally worth it though, Arnie made a cool exit, complete with explosion.

If you were wondering how much killing and shooting went on in Eraser, then here’s a handy counter.

Arnold is a pure action star, and we have to agree with Pablo Francisco when he says that between him, and the amazing movie voice guy, we would watch a movie about almost anything. Get dooooownnn!
