It is reported that Joker: Folie à Deux will also be a musical.

Lady Gaga is reportedly in talks to star as Harley Quinn in the sequel to 2019’s dark comic book movie Joker.

Last week, Joker director Todd Phillips confirmed a sequel to the acclaimed film was underway, sharing an image on social media of actor Joaquin Phoenix reading a script for the follow-up, which is called Joker: Folie à Deux.

The Folie à Deux title is a reference to a medical condition where two or more people start sharing delusions.

As this would suggest, it doesn’t look like Phoenix will be alone in the sequel and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Lady Gaga is in talks to star as Harley Quinn in the film.

This would not be the first big-screen appearance for Gaga, with the pop megastar receiving widespread praise for her performance in 2018’s A Star is Born and her starring role in last year’s House of Gucci.

She has also already worked with Phillips, who produced A Star is Born.

Of course, in recent years Harley Quinn has been portrayed on screen by Margot Robbie who has played the Joker’s sidekick and romantic partner in three DC films.

However, Phoenix’s Joker was set in a different universe to these films, meaning all roles are up for grabs, and that’s if the film’s creators even decide to use DC characters that already exist.

The sequel is also apparently set to be a musical, which may explain the desire to get one of the biggest voices in music involved in the film.

On its release in 2019, Joker was a monumental critical and commercial success, making more than $1 billion at the global box office and getting nominated for 11 Oscars.

Phoenix himself picked up both the BAFTA and the Academy Award for best actor for his performance in the film.
