Netflix star reportedly offered lead role in upcoming Madonna biopic

Rory Cashin

The movie will be directed by Madonna herself.

Following in the very successful footsteps of the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody (for Queen) and Rocketman (for Elton John), as well as the upcoming Elvis (for… well, you can guess), there is a huge Madonna biopic currently in the works.

Variety has reported that there were over a dozen serious candidates, apparently including Florence Pugh (Black Widow), Alexa Demie (Euphoria) and Odessa Young (The Staircase), as well as singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira.

However, it has been revealed that role has been offered to Ozark and Inventing Anna star Julia Garner, who is said set to accept the offer very soon.

The new biopic will actually be directed by Madonna herself, who also co-wrote the script with Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl On The Train, Secretary) and Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body, Juno).

When the movie was first announced, Madonna stated that:

“[I hope to] convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world. The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

At the moment, there are no other details – including an official title, filming dates, other cast members, etc. – but the movie will be released by Universal Pictures, most likely some time in 2023.
