This one has Oscar potential all over it.

As we head further into the colder months and longer nights, the quality of movies generally tends to get higher and higher as we get closer and closer to awards season.

Case in point: Just Mercy tells the the true story of young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), who is offered a host of high-paying jobs once he finishes law school, but instead heads to Alabama to help those on the death row who have been wrongly convicted.

One of his very first cases was that of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), a man who was found guilty for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a lot of evidence to prove his innocence, and the only witness was a convicted felon who had a good reason to lie.

With the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Brie Larson), they take on the gargantuan case, fighting against local politics and outright racism towards him and his client.

The movie comes from the director of the brilliant hidden-gem Short Term 12, and the trailer alone lets us know that this is going to be a powerful, weepie drama. And who doesn’t love a good cry in the cinema every now and again??
