Full cast announced for live-action remake of another Disney classic

Following in the footsteps of The Jungle Book, Beauty & The Beast and the upcoming Lion King remake.

Disney have obviously realised that there is some serious money to be made from remaking their animated classics.

It more or less really kicked off in 2010 when Alice In Wonderland broke the billion-dollar box office mark, and has since been followed by Maleficent ($758 million), Cinderella ($543 million), The Jungle Book ($967 million), and most recently, Beauty & The Beast ($1.264 billion).

Yep, that is a pretty deep goldmine to be… well… mined, and there are at least six more live-action remakes in the works over the next two years, with Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King all set for 2019, and while 2020 will bring Mulan and Maleficent II, as well as the newly confirmed details for The Lady & The Tramp.

The original version was released 1955, and it told the romantic tale of a sheltered uptown Cocker Spaniel dog and a streetwise downtown Mutt.

It is still rightfully considered a Disney classic, and the cast for the live-action (i.e. the actors pretending to be dogs), with the two leads set to be played by Justin Theroux (The Leftovers) and Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok), while the supporting cast will include Ashley Jensen (Catastrophe) as Scottish terrier Jackie, Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange) as English bulldog Bull, and Kiersey Clemons (Heart Beats Loud) will play Lady’s human owner, Darling.

The movie is to be directed by Charlie Bean (The LEGO Batman Movie), but anyone looking forward to seeing it on the big-screen might be surprised to learn that it will instead be heading straight to Disney’s home-streaming service, which is being set up as direct competitor to Netflix, which is itself getting its own live-action version of animated classic later this year.

In the meantime, time to enjoy a classic:
