Idris Elba hints at massive changes for Luther as the film gathers pace

Luther film

Luther will be back.

If you’re not familiar with DCI John Luther, you’ll be very pleased to know that the first four seasons of the show are on Netflix.

Watch them, they’re good.

However, as is the norm, consider this to be your spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the latest episodes in season five.

How do you solve a problem like Alice?

Can’t live with her, can’t live without her.

Can’t bring her onto a crime scene because she’ll probably shoot an extremely professional cop in the head before firing two bullets into your abdomen.

Okay, that’s a very specific character reference for Miss Morgan, but with the most recent season of Luther ending on a literal cliffhanger (well, Alice hanging onto some scaffolding before plummeting to the concrete below) it’s clear that we haven’t seen the end of Neil Cross’ macabre thriller.

Of course, when he’s not talking about the Bond role, Idris Elba has been the biggest cheerleader for a Luther film and during an interview with EW, the star of The Wire and American Gangster gave his view on what a Luther film might involve.

Of course, the final image of Luther saw him being taken away in handcuffs and it appears that the potential film will pick up right where the TV show left off.

“I feel like John has to make some decision in jail,” said Elba.

“It’s quite clear that it would be very difficult for him to be a policeman moving forward. I think that’s a great setup for a movie.”

Truth be told, we’re not against the idea of a Luther film being set in prison because it would be a massive tonal shift in terms of what we’ve previously seen.

Also, the idea that Luther clearly has to plot a way out, clear his name, and avoid the people who he locked up in the first place could lead to an interesting game of cat-and-mouse.

As always with the highly-rumoured Luther film, we shall wait and see.
