Making A Murderer: New document means Steven Avery’s family history just got more interesting

Making A Murderer

A 2009 court document has given the case a new angle.

There’s no denying that the entire world is transfixed by the case of Steven Avery and, while the Netflix series Making A Murderer does make a compelling case for Steven’s innocence, there’s always more to every story.

While Avery was prohibited from submitting new evidence during his trial for the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005, The Wrap uncovered a 2009 court filing which states that Steven has suggested that members of his own family were capable of murdering the AutoTrader photographer.

In the document, Steven suggests that his brothers, Charles and Earl Avery, as well as his nephew Bobby Dassey and brother-in-law Scott Tadych, all had the means and motive to kill Halbach.

The document outlines and discusses the history of criminality that has existed in the Avery family.

For example, Charles Avery has been involved in previous incidents of assault against women, including clients that visited the Avery Salvage Yard. The 59-page court document also states that Charles had a motive to “frame Steven over money, a share of the family business, and over Jodi Stachowski,” Steven’s former girlfriend.

While this document wasn’t admissible or pertinent for Steven’s actual case in ’05, as we all saw in Making A Murderer, it goes on critiscise the behaviour of other Avery family members.

The sexual assaults that were committed by Earl Avery are brought to light also and according to the document, Earl admitted to driving his golf cart past Halbach’s car where it was found on the salvage yard, while telling police that he is willing to give “any information incriminating to Steven, saying that ‘even if my brother did something, I would tell.’”

Regarding Bobby Dassey, the document highlights a history of confrontation between both men by saying, “Bobby stated that Steven would lie in order to ‘stab ya in the back’, and that Steven had done this to him in the past.”

As for Steven’s brother-in-law Scott Tadych, it’s stated that “Tadych’s ‘motive to kill Ms. Halbach is his violent and volatile personality,’” along with “previous experiences with the court system show him to be a violent and impulsive person, particularly towards women.”

Staying with the case, but on a different tangent, prosecuting lawyer Ken Kratz was speaking with Fox News last night where he once again mentioned his belief that some damning evidence against Steven Avery was left on the cutting room floor.

He also explained the reasons behind his inappropriate behaviour towards female jurors. Defence lawyer Dean Strang was also interviewed by host Megyn Kelly.
