Directors of Avengers: Endgame discuss the arrival of an LGBTQ+ character in the MCU

Rory Cashin

The LGBTQ+ community has yet to be represented within these movies.

The directors of Avengers: Endgame have been a part of the MCU for a while now.

Joe and Anthony Russo joined back in 2014, for their first entry into the franchise, the magnificent Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Since then, they have continued to make some of the biggest movies in the series – Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and now Avengers: Endgame – but since 2014, the MCU has had a series of serious “firsts”.

They’ve had their first black superhero – the hugely successful Black Panther.

They’ve had their first female-fronted superhero movie – the also hugely successful Captain Marvel.

Recently, they announced that they have begun pre-production on their first Asian superhero – the sure-to-be-successful Shang Chi.

However, despite the multitude of characters and actors and worlds and storylines, the MCU is still, remarkably, without an identifiable LGBTQ+ character.

With blockbusters capable of providing a level of representation to audiences that few other things can, it does seem like the time has come for audiences to get their first LGBTQ+ superhero. Or supervillian, for that matter.

In the run-up to the release of Avengers: Endgame, JOE was lucky enough to have a nice long chat with the directors, and the conversation turned to this type of representation within the MCU.

Anthony Russo tells us that “Yeah, but while we can’t really speak to what Marvel is going to do in the future, that is more for them to say, when they’re ready. But we do know that diversity is a big part of how they’re moving forward, and there are going to be some very, very exciting things coming on that front.”

And Joe Russo adds, “Certainly, an LGBTQ+ character.”

You can check out the rest of our conversation with The Russo Brothers below, where we cover everything from which of the cast was most likely to ruin a take due to getting a fit of the giggles, as well as how potentially confusing it can be to work on a set with The Three Chrises (Evans, Hemsworth, Pratt)!

Additionally, you can check out our chats with Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson), and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) as they discuss all they can possibly discuss – without giving any spoilers! – on the new movie, right here.
