Movies & TV

01st Apr 2022

An Oscar-winning historical epic is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It won five Oscars including Best Picture.

At long last, the weekend is here.

And with it is plenty of movies to watch on telly.

Here’s your options for Friday, 1 April.

Kingsman: The Secret Service – Film4 – 9pm

The very fun first entry in the spy franchise.

Zero Dark Thirty – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

This Oscar Best Picture nominee dramatises the nearly decade-long international manhunt for Osama bin Laden.

Breaking In – Virgin Media One – 9pm

Gabrielle Union stars as a woman who must fight to protect her family during a home invasion in this action thriller.

Bad Neighbours 2 – E4 – 9pm

In this hit comedy sequel, a married couple (Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen) plot to take down a debaucherous sorority after its members move in next door.

Frankenstein – Horror Channel – 9pm

Mary Shelley’s classic horror story gets adapted for the screen by the director of Candyman.

Flatliners – Great! Movies Classic – 9pm

This stylish ’90s horror-thriller sees five medical students (including Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon and Kiefer Sutherland) work to produce near-death experiences in an attempt to find out what happens after you die.

The Fastest Gun Alive – TG4 – 9.30pm

It wouldn’t be Friday if TG4 wasn’t playing a classic western.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle – RTÉ2 – 9.35pm

The less fun second entry in the spy franchise.

Braveheart – BBC One – 10.35pm

Directed by and starring Mel Gibson, our pick for tonight sees the actor play Scottish warrior William Wallace and depicts him leading the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England (Patrick McGoohan).

While criticised by some for its historical inaccuracies, Braveheart’s powerful performances, stunning battle scenes and now iconic quotes (“FREEDOM!”) helped it win five Oscars, including the Best Picture award.

JOE previously praised the movie at length in a separate article, which you can read here.

Cooties – Horror Channel – 10.50pm

This horror-comedy with Elijah Wood sees a mysterious virus hit an isolated elementary school, transforming the kids into killer zombies.

Miss Sloane – RTÉ One – 11.15pm

Recent Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain stars in this well-reviewed political thriller.

The Great Wall – Film4 – 11.40pm

Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal play European mercenaries who journey to The Great Wall in 11th century China just as alien monsters attack.

While very silly in its story, Hero and House of Flying Daggers director Zhang Yimou makes the action set-pieces at least look spectacular.

Mad Max – Turner Classic Movies – 12.15am

Mel Gibson stars again, this time in the first film in the now legendary post-apocalyptic action franchise.

Life of the Party – RTÉ2 – 12.40am

Melissa McCarthy returns to college in this 2018 comedy.
