A terrific ’90s crime drama is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

“Forget about it.”

It is Wednesday, which means the weekend is still quite a bit away.

That said, you can always try to make the time fly quicker by watching a good movie.

On that note, here are the films airing on TV tonight.

Donnie Brasco – Great! Movies Classic – 9pm

Our pick for tonight is this crime drama focusing on an FBI undercover agent (Johnny Depp) who infiltrates a New York crime family in the ’70s under the alias Donnie Brasco.

However, the job grows more difficult by the true friendship that develops between the undercover agent and an older mobster (Al Pacino).

Based loosely on true events, Donnie Brasco’s great script and terrific cast – including the late Anne Heche – help make it a tense and surprisingly emotional crime drama.

Zombieland: Double Tap – Film4 – 9pm

The long-awaited follow-up to 2009’s hit zombie comedy.

Hard Target – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Jean-Claude Van Damme uncovers a sinister group of wealthy men who hunt the homeless for sport in this action film that was Face/Off director John Woo’s first English-language movie.

Platoon – TG4 – 10.30pm

A new US recruit (Charlie Sheen) in the Vietnam war finds himself caught in a battle of wills between two sergeants, one good (Willem Dafoe) and the other evil (Tom Berenger), in Oliver Stone’s visceral Oscar Best Picture winner.

In the Heart of the Sea – BBC One – 10.40pm

From director Ron Howard and starring Chris Hemsworth, this historical adventure drama details the real-life sinking of an American whaling ship in 1820 that wound up inspiring the novel Moby-Dick.

The Assistant – Film4 – 11pm

This acclaimed and timely 2019 drama follows the day in the life of a junior assistant (Ozark’s Julia Garner) to a powerful abusive entertainment mogul.

Lethal Weapon – Turner Classic Movies – 11.05pm

An absolute classic of the buddy cop action movie sub-genre that celebrated its 35th anniversary earlier this year.

Revolution – Great! Movies Classic – 11.35pm

Al Pacino stars again, this time as a New York fur trapper who involuntarily gets pulled into the American Revolution.
