The most recent entry in a classic action franchise is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Rambo last blood

It saw a huge star reprising one of his most beloved roles.

Staying in this Friday night but don’t want to watch The Late Late Show or the terrific action movie just added to Netflix? Well, here are the films airing on TV this evening.

John Wick: Chapter 2 – Sky Showcase – 9pm

Given John Wick: Chapter 4 being in cinemas now and the recent release of the trailer for the John Wick prequel TV show The Continental, what better time to check out the excellent second entry in the action franchise?

Mission: Impossible – Fallout – Film4 – 9pm

Another absolutely top-notch action sequel.

The Inbetweeners 2 – E4 – 9pm

The inbetweeners meet up again for a holiday in Australia.

Point Break – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Not the brilliant Kathryn Bigelow original but the 2015 remake with 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ghosts of Mars – Legend – 9pm

Critically panned at the time of its release in 2001, this sci-fi horror from director John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing) has its defenders.

Hombre – TG4 – 9.35pm

An acclaimed ’60s revisionist Western starring Paul Newman.

Rambo: Last Blood – Virgin Media One – 10pm

Our pick for tonight is this fifth and last to-date entry in the Rambo action franchise which sees Sylvester Stallone return after 11 years as Vietnam veteran John Rambo. This time around, the character wages war against a Mexican drug cartel after his friend’s granddaughter is kidnapped.

Released in 2019, Rambo: Last Blood was not well received by reviewers, earning a 26% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Common issues reviewers had with the movie were its grim tone and its emphasis on ultra-violent set-pieces over character and story.

That said, it seems to have been better received by cinemagoers. It boasts an 81% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and made over $90 million dollars at the box office.

Hellboy – MTV – 10pm

Given this superhero franchise is about to be rebooted, now is a good time to catch up on the brilliant 2004 original.

American Pie: Uncut – Comedy Central – 10pm

An uncut version of the already very raunchy sex comedy.

Jigsaw – Sky Sci-Fi – 10pm

The decent eighth entry in the long-running Saw horror series.

Bridget Jones’s Diary – RTÉ2 – 10pm

The beloved rom-com starring Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

Fire Down Below – Turner Classic Movies – 11.20pm

Steven Seagal is the lead in this critically panned eco-action flick.

I Give It A Year – BBC One – 11.40pm

This anti-rom-com with a great ensemble cast – including Anna Faris, Minnie Driver, Olivia Colman, Rafe Spall, Rose Byrne and Stephen Merchant – is a bit of a mixed bag.

Little Fockers – RTÉ One – 11.45pm

Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro return in this not very good sequel to Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers.

Pet Sematary – Film4 – 11.55pm

The most recent adaptation of horror legend Stephen King’s dark but much loved novel.
