Pain and Glory – BBC Two – 11.55pm

Last but not least is our pick for tonight, which stars Antonio Banderas as Salvador, an aging Spanish director in the midst of both a creative and health crisis.

With one of his older movies newly restored and set to be screened again, Salvador reconnects with its star (Asier Etxeandia) for the first time in years – which then leads him to reminisce further about his past, including his relationship with his mother (Penelope Cruz).

Helmed by legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar (Volver, The Skin I Live In) and partly inspired by his life, Pain and Glory is funny, intelligent, emotionally rich and stunningly directed.

It’s no surprise that the 2019 drama received a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and was nominated for two Oscars, including Banderas for Best Actor.
