An underseen thriller gem is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Little Woods

It features two big stars and holds a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Need a movie to watch this Bank Holiday Monday? Well, there are plenty of good ones among the TV line-up for this evening.

Here are the films airing on the telly tonight.

John Wick: Chapter 2 – Sky Showcase – 9pm

The second and arguably best of the Keanu Reeves-led action franchise, although the fourth one in cinemas now certainly gives it a run for its money.

Highlander – Legend – 9pm

Christoper Lambert and a scene-stealing Sean Connery star in this very fun ’80s fantasy action-adventure.

24 Hours to Live – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Ethan Hawke’s Taken but with a sci-fi twist.

Peppermint – Film4 – 9pm

Meanwhile, the director of Taken helms this action-thriller in which a mother (Jennifer Garner) seeks revenge against the drug cartel that killed her husband and daughter.

A 13% score on Rotten Tomatoes suggests this is not up there with the Liam Neeson cult hit.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – RTÉ One – 9.30pm

A sequel to the smash hit musical rom-com based around ABBA songs.

The English Patient – TG4 – 9.30pm

The beautiful romantic war drama starring Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliette Binoche that swept the Oscars in 1997, winning nine awards – including Best Picture and Best Director for Anthony Minghella.

The Quiet Ones – Turner Classic Movies – 10.55pm

An early role for House of the Dragon’s Olivia Cooke, she plays a teenager who may be possessed by something supernatural in this ’70s set chiller.

Crossing the Line – AMC – 11pm

Our pick for tonight is this 2018 crime thriller drama that focuses on Ollie (Tessa Thompson, Thor: Ragnarok), a woman living in a rundown North Dakota town who is on probation after getting caught illegally running prescription pills over the Canadian border.

Though determined to stay on the right side of the law, Ollie is forced to return to the crime life after her adopted sister Deb (Lily James, Pam & Tommy) shows up on her doorstep desperate for her help.

The directorial debut of Nia DaCosta (2021’s Candyman reboot, the upcoming The Marvels), Crossing the Line – also known as Little Woods in the US – is a gripping and tense thriller, elevated by the emotional sisterly bond at its centre, its authentic sense of place, its exploration of various societal issues and a terrific cast, which also includes James Badge Dale (The Empty Man) and the late and great Lance Reddick (The Wire).

The Wolf of Wall Street – ITV4 – 11pm

Leonardo DiCaprio delivers one of his greatest performances ever in this brilliant black comedy crime drama from Martin Scorsese that is based on true events.

Saw: The Final Chapter – Sky Sci-Fi – 11pm

The seventh installment in the horror series but actually not the last chapter, as there have been two more Saw films since then and another one due for release later this year.

Colombiana – Film4 – 11.05pm

Zoe Saldaña stars in this watchable action thriller as a woman who seeks revenge 15 years after her family was killed by a drug lord.

Black Rock – Legend – 11.15pm

This decent horror thriller sees a camping trip on a Maine island turn nightmarish for three women (Kate Bosworth, Katie Aselton and Lake Bell) after they encounter a group of violent war veterans.

The Graduate – BBC Two – 11.35pm

“Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me…”
