A terrific Tom Hanks drama is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Clint Eastwood directed the movie which is based on true events.

Looking for something to watch during these last few hours of the weekend?

Well, there’s a decent line-up of films on the box tonight.

Here are the offerings.

Knives Out – Film4 – 9pm

This very fun mystery sees Daniel Craig play a master detective investigating the death of the patriarch (Christopher Plummer) of a wealthy and dysfunctional family.

Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis and Toni Collette also feature in the star-studded cast.

Lethal Weapon – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

An absolute classic in the buddy cop action film sub-genre, why not take JOE’s recent Lethal Weapon quiz we whipped together to mark its 35th anniversary.

The Meg – Comedy Central – 9pm

A sci-fi action flick which JOE previously dubbed the “the greatest movie of all time… for about three minutes”.

The Inbetweeners Movie – E4 – 9pm

The much-loved sitcom gets the classic big-screen treatment, meaning the writers send the characters on holidays.

Man on Wire – Pick – 9pm

This excellent documentary chronicles Philippe Petit’s 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center.

Jaws: The Revenge – ITV4 – 9pm

This fourth and final entry in the killer shark franchise has a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Holcroft Covenant – Great! Movies Classic – 9pm

Michael Caine – who appears in Jaws: The Revenge – also stars in this ’80s thriller as a man who finds himself part of a mysterious conspiracy to gain hidden Nazi funds.

On the Basis of Sex – RTÉ One – 9.30pm

This solid 2018 biographical legal drama is based on the life and early cases of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones).

Force of Execution – ITV4 – 10.55pm

A direct-to-video action thriller starring Danny Trejo, Steven Seagal and Ving Rhames.

Sully – BBC One – 11.10pm

Our pick for tonight, this drama based on true events tells the story of airline pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) and his emergency landing of a 2009 flight on the Hudson River in New York.

Dubbed the “Miracle on the Hudson”, the movie also chronicles the subsequent investigation into the landing in which Sully’s actions are scrutinised.

Thanks to Hanks’ emotional and warm performance, Clint Eastwood’s taut and tight direction and a beautifully structured screenplay, Sully is a movie worthy of the real-life hero it depicts.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – Comedy Central – 11.10pm

For my money, the second best Mission: Impossible movie behind Fallout.

Mama – Horror Channel – 12.15am

If you’re still up, Jessica Chastain plays a punk rocker in this decent supernatural horror from the director of It and the writer of Luther.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
