That totally essential Independence Day sequel is among the movies on TV tonight

Movies on TV Thursday 23 September

One more day until the weekend.

More than one movie to choose tonight, however.

You know the drill.

Here are the most interesting movie options on your television screen on Thursday, 23 September…

Deep Impact – Film4 – 6.40pm

A decent cast – Morgan Freeman, Robert Duvall, Elijah Wood, Téa Leoni, Jon Favreau, Vanessa Redgrave – brace themselves for the end of the world when a highly destructive comet comes-a-calling.

Independence Day: Resurgence – Film4 – 9pm

Our main pick on a, let’s be honest, not great evening for movies on TV.

Will Smith did not, in fact, welcome aliens back to earth in the sequel to the much-loved Independence Day, choosing instead to sit this one out.

Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are involved, though, if you’re in the mood for some sci-fi nostalgia.

Contagion – Turner Classic Movies / TCM – 9pm

We don’t want to accuse the TCM programming team of being lazy or anything but they did screen Contagion just two nights ago.

They’re also showing Liam Neeson’s Run All Night for at least the third time in less than a week right afterwards.

Anyway, Contagion is very good pandemic-shaped entertainment – honestly! – and at least it’s on at a more reasonable hour this time.

Pale Rider – ITV4 – 9pm

Clint Eastwood is the living manifestation of death in the highest-grossing western of the 1980s.

Conan the Barbarian – Film4 – 11.20pm

Jason Momoa edition.

Criminal – Channel 4 – 1.50am

Still awake at 2am? Have a fairly middling Kevin Costner mystery thriller.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
