A mesmerising war film is among the movies on TV tonight

Movies on TV Thursday 30 September

It’s the end of the month.

The weather isn’t messing around.

The new James Bond adventure is out in cinemas today.

And, as ever, there are movies on your television screen.

Here’s what caught our eye for Thursday, 30 September…

Bridge of Spies – Film4 – 6.15pm

Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance star in Steven Spielberg’s tense Cold War drama.

One of the great ‘Sunday afternoon dad movies’ of the past few years, probably just as effective shortly after 6pm on a rainy Thursday evening.

The Goonies – TCM – 6.40pm

Beloved ‘coming of age’ adventure in which a bunch of kids set out to find a pirate’s buried treasure.

Shooter – Film4 – 9pm

Mark Wahlberg headlines as a military sniper caught up in a vast conspiracy.

Van Helsing – ITV4 – 9pm

Hugh Jackman takes on the role of Dracula’s greatest foe in a mid-2000s action film that is kinda-sorta in the ‘so bad it’s good’ camp, if you’re in such a mood.

Monos – Film4 – 11.25pm

Our main pick this evening.

A spellbinding film with incredible visuals and committed performances from a young, largely unknown cast.

Monos tells the story of a squad of teenage soldiers assigned to guard a hostage on a remote mountain. Tensions fray within the group as leadership is challenged and harsh lessons are subsequently learned.

Conan the Barbarian – ITV4 – 11.35pm

The 1982 Arnie version.

Under The Skin – Film4 – 1.30am

Scarlett Johansson drives around Glasgow seducing men.

Sounds like harmless fun, only she’s hiding a really quite terrifying secret.
