One of the best crime thrillers ever made is among the movies on TV tonight

Dave Hanratty

Movies on TV Wednesday 29 September

Midweek Movie Mix.

That’s the state of play right now.

As for what might potentially play out on your TV screen tonight – Wednesday 29 September – well, let’s have a look, shall we?

Pale Rider – ITV4 – 9pm

A famous Clint Eastwood western goes up against the Champions League.

Independence Day: Resurgence – Film4 – 9pm

The second one.

Oldboy – Turner Classic Movies / TCM – 9pm

Spike Lee directs Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen in a frankly bizarre remake of a truly excellent Korean revenge film.

Having committed an unknown slight, Brolin’s character is imprisoned in a hotel room for 20 years. Finally freed, he sets out in search of answers and bloody vengeance.

Sounds great, right? The original is. This is not.

L.A. Confidential  – TCM – 11.10pm

Our main pick this evening.

Much like Se7en last night, it really is worth staying up a little late to experience one of the very best crime thrillers of the 1990s.

Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey and Kim Basinger dive into corruption and conspiracy in 1950s Hollywood. Can anyone possibly get away clean?

Boy Erased – BBC Two – 11.15pm

Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Lucas Hedges head up a stirring true story drama in which a conversion therapy program threatens to tear a Baptist family apart.

A Cure For Wellness – Film4 – 11.20pm

Fantasy horror in which an ambitious executive attempts to retrieve his boss from a wellness retreat. Things, oddly enough, don’t go very well at all.

True Grit – ITV4 – 11.25pm

Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin face off in the Coen Brothers’ reimagining of another classic western.

The Gift – Channel 4 – 2am

Decent creepy thriller with Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall and Joel Edgerton – who also serves as director.

Seriously, why is this on at 2am?

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
